Welcome to 13 Weeks to Mindfulness from TRUE PATH. This is a 13-week series that takes you from learning what mindfulness is…all the way to becoming organically mindful after 13 weeks….making mindfulness a habit.

Last week we talk about Awareness​. Awareness is the first part of getting out of your own head or Lala land, as I like to say. Lala land consist of us living in the past and/or future. The goal is to live in the now…the present.

This week we’re talking about breathing! Breathing is something that we all take for granted. Breathing is pretty much the only thing we do involuntarily that we actually have control over.

This week TRUE PATH reads… “Breathing — Do you ever think about your breath during the day…not whether it is good or bad, but that you actually take over 20,000 of them a day. This week, take 60 seconds each day and pay attention to the 15 or so breaths you take that minute. Pay attention to the air that flows in and out. (Google mindful breathing…it may help with your practice).”

When we breathe, we take in oxygen which oxygenates the cells in our body and our brain. One amazing fact about breathing is that we exhale 70% of the toxins in your body! The other 30% makes up of…perspiration 19%, urination 8%, and we defecate 3%. That was amazing when I first heard that fact…we exhale 70% of the toxins in our body!
That’s a great reason to take a deep breath!

Breathing is an extremely important aspect of our life, and one of the most underrated, in my opinion. One thing I say is that “if you can control your breath…you can control your life.”

Anxiety and Stress run wild in this life and many times those emotions take control of us…and we let it. Once an emotion like anxiety, stress or anger rise up and take over…we are just along for the ride. An emotion takes approximately 5–7 seconds to hit. If we don’t catch the emotion before it takes over…We’re a slave to them.

Using your breath​ to catch an emotion before it takes over is an amazing tool. As soon as you feel an emotion rising up, Stop…take one long, deep, slow breath. At this point you have stopped the emotion from taking over, and you have now taken control.

To better understand yourself for the future, label the emotion that was trying to take over. Once you understand what the emotion is, you can then manage it correctly instead of it managing you.
